Summary:

The introduction of tilapia to irrigation reservoirs in Israel improved the efficiency of water usage and reduced the cost of water needed for tilapia culture. Although requiring considerable investment, many dual-use reservoirs were constructed and equipped for efficient harvesting. In a study, the authors found that increasing overall tilapia yields through higher stocking density did not guarantee profitability. On the contrary, lower total yields consisting of larger tilapia resulted in higher returns per kilogram of fish.

The 10th International Symposium on Tilapia in Aquaculture – ISTA10

The symposium was hosted by the Israeli Fish Breeders Association and the Society of Israeli Aquaculture & Marine Biotechnology. The organizing committee, chaired by Prof. Gideon Hulata of the Dept. of Poultry and Aquaculture, Agricultural research Organization, consisted of representatives of the host organizations, the Dept. of Fisheries and the Extension Service of the Ministry of Agricultural & Rural Development, the Faculty of Agriculture of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the American Tilapia Association / University of Arizona.
